Cavaliers confident heading into Region Tourney

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Baseball season is always one of ebbs and flows.

There's no better example than the 2013 Darton State Cavaliers.

After racing out to a start that included a school record 15-game winning streak, Darton lost three straight, dropping them for the top of the GCAA standings.

But two shutout wins over league-leading Georgia Perimeter to close out the regular season has Cavalier head coach Scot Hemmings optimistic about this week's conference tournament.

"I'm really happy with the direction we're headed, and I feel good about this thing," Hemmings says. "I still think we're the best team in this league."

"If we pitch well, we're going to win," he adds.

This week's tourney will be played at Cavalier Field, where Darton State is 20-4 this season. That's just another factor leaving Hemmings confident.

"I think it's a positive because we've been so good at home," he says. "I think it's a huge benefit. We're not having to travel. We're not having to find hotels, places to eat. The guys are settled in their routine, and I think it's going to be good for us."

With the offense and pitching back to midseason form, Hemmings and his 3rd seeded Cavaliers aren't afraid to say it: they feel they're the favorites in this week's tournament.

"Right now, I do," says shortstop Cody Wofford. "We're playing really well right now and we're hosting the tournament, so it doesn't get much better than that."

Now the Cavs' hope they can ride this wave of confidence to the school's first ever region tournament championship.

Darton State opens Region Tournament play against South Georgia College at 3:30 Wednesday.
