Just when you thought Richland County election leadership was getting resolved and public trust reinstated, dysfunction raises its ugly head again. It seems that miscommunication is once again the order of the day, with the search committee initially refusing to release the names of the three finalists for the director's position. Apparently they didn't understand that State law mandates disclosure of these candidates names, but we were hoping that this time around, it would be a more open, transparent process than Ms McBride's hiring.
This was a chance for the Board of Elections to redeem itself by conducting a comprehensive search for competent and qualified candidates, then selecting one of them to take the reins. Seems simple enough. So why are we not surprised? This bungled situation just reinforces the argument for turning responsibility over to the State Election Commission .
