Woman leaves baby with near stranger to run from officers, police say

Melissa Sue Meyer, 23, of Lancaster Melissa Sue Meyer, 23, of Lancaster
LANCASTER, SC (WBTV) -

Police in Lancaster say a woman has been charged after she left her child with a woman she just met in order to try and flee from investigators.

Melissa Sue Meyer, 23, is charged with unlawful conduct toward a child, according to the arrest warrant from the Lancaster Police Department.

Police say the incident occurred along 15th and Elm Streets on Tuesday.

Meyer was running from police because she knew she had an outstanding warrant on a shoplifting charge, police say. She told police she would turn herself in when she had the bail money and would leave her child with her cousin.

Police say that story turned out to be false. The woman she left the baby with had only met Meyer just days before the incident, police say.

The Department of Social Services is investigating the case.
