Work begins on Folly Beach Co. Park this week

FOLLY BEACH, SC (WCSC) -

Construction is expected to begin this weekend on Folly Beach County Park, which has been closed since Hurricane Irene moved through two years ago.

The entire park is fenced off and crews will soon start pulling in barges and piping to start pumping sand to restore the eroded land.

There are two separate phases to the construction plan. The first phase is to re-nourish the beach using sand from the Folly River. Phase two consists of building a groin to extend 745 feet out to the ocean to preserve the beach from further erosion, the main issue which caused the park to be shut down two years ago.

The project is expected to cost $3 million. When completed the parking lot will be able to hold 200 cars.

Irene's waters wiped out the dunes, washed out the parking lots, and made some facilities inaccessible.

Fences around the property have not only kept people out, but also helped to avoid interference with sea turtles' habitat and nesting season.
