EASLEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

It was a hero's sendoff for a fallen Upstate soldier.

Friends, family and the entire Easley community said goodbye to Private 1st Class Barrett Austin, with many saluting his casket as it rode by, thanking him for his sacrifice.

Hundreds lined Highway 123 and Highway 8 Wednesday evening to pay tribute to Austin. He died April 21 after sustaining injuries serving in Afghanistan.

Austin has been described by those who knew him simply as a good man who one could easily make friends with. And his commanders told his family Wednesday that it extended to the battlefield.

"I grew to admire a man that had a knack for making people laugh, who would shoulder any task with a smile and come back for more," said one commander.

Austin was a combat engineer, which is considered one of the most dangerous jobs on the battlefield. His family said that was how he was injured.

Austin was taken to Germany for treatment but succumbed to his injuries, surrounded by his wife, mother and father.
