TAYLORSVILLE, NC (WBTV) -

The Alexander County Sheriff's Office arrested two people after a 7-year-old student brought a gun to school Thursday, according to officials.

Around lunchtime deputies were notified by staff at Sugar Loaf Elementary School that a first grade student had brought a handgun to school and that the weapon had been seized by school staff following their notification of its presence.

Officers immediately responded to the school and met with school staff on site to ensure the safety of the students and launch an investigation into the incident.

The student who allegedly brought the weapon to school was taken into custody, and the weapon was removed from school premises. Officers checked the school to ensure that no other weapons were present.

Later Thursday, officials said they arrested Timothy Christopher Mounts, 36, and Kimberly Setzer, 41, and charged them with one count each of fail to store a firearm to protect a minor.

Both were placed under a $1,200 bond and given a court date of May 20.

Authorities said they "commend the professionalism and quick response by the staff at Sugar Loaf Elementary School, whose actions kept the students and staff there safe."

Officials say that disciplinary action by the Alexander County School System and charges by law enforcement are pending in the case.
