CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

The Charlotte Bobcats have announced that head coach Mike Dunlap will not be returning as the head coach for the Queen City's professional basketball team.

The Charlotte Bobcats announced on Twitter just after 1 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.

"Mike Dunlap will not return as head coach," the team's Public Relations head BJ Evans tweeted. "Team posted a 21-61 record this season."

Fans reacted immediately.

"I think that's great" one man told WBTV. "I haven't seen any scoring lately so maybe they need somebody else."

But another fan disagreed.

"I don't think this was a good idea" he said. "He's {Dunlap} is a good guy. He knows his stuff. He knows what he's doing. I think they should have let him stand a little longer you know, to see how he reacts to more situations" the man told WBTV.

In a press release sent out after the tweet, Charlotte Bobcats President of Basketball Operations Rod Higgins announced that Dunlap was relieved of his duties as head coach, saying the search for his successor will begin immediately.

"Rich Cho and I conducted our season-ending review and met with Coach Dunlap to reflect on this season.  As an organization, it was decided that we needed to make a change with the head coach position," Higgins said.

"We want to thank Mike for his contribution and wish him the best in his future endeavors."

Dunlap, who was in his first season with the Bobcats, was hired as the fifth head coach in franchise history on June 20, 2012

The team shed the title of "Worst NBA team" by one game this season. In 2011-2012 season the Bobcats had the worst team record in NBA history.

Another fan says he believes the team set Dunlap up for failure.

"By not giving him enough time to shape the team and make the team how he wanted" the fan said.
