The South Carolina State Board of Trustees has chosen current Citadel chief operations officer Dr. Thomas Elzey to be the school's 11th president.

The board voted 6-5 in favor of Elzey over current interim president Dr. Cynthia Warrick. Warrick was not one of the finalists chosen by the search committee, but was allowed to be considered via "write-in" vote.

During the argument over the vote, Trustee Tony Grant said, "This is a flawed bait-and-switch process."

In February, students staged a protest to show their support of Warrick to become the school's permanent president.

Elzey is The Citadel's senior, non-academic vice president, holding the rank of brigadier general in the South Carolina Militia.

"My record and my personal integrity speaks for itself," said Elzey. "I will make sure that permeates every decision that I make here at the university."

"I think we've got some really great days ahead of us," he said. "I'm really excited about it."

Elzey's the 11th president of South Carolina State. His first day is June 15th.

Warrick will serve as interim president until the end of next month.

The university has been without a permanent president since Dr. George Cooper resigned in March of 2012.
