USC Baseball's Pearce skips BoSox, sticks with Gamecocks for another season

(Columbia-AP) Aug. 20, 2004 - It seemed like a no-brainer for South Carolina's Steve Pearce. The lifelong Boston fan was picked by his beloved Red Sox and offered a sizable contract to go pro.

Pearce even worked out at Fenway Park with the club during his summer in the Cape Cod League.

But, the Gamecock baseball player chose to stay at South Carolina and try for a fourth consecutive trip to Omaha.

Pearce ended the Red Sox rights to their tenth-round selection when he sat through a marketing class Thursday.

The first baseman was a big reason for the Gamecocks' third-straight College World Series appearance. Pearce joined the Gamecocks last season after two years at Indian River Community College.

He led USC with a .348 batting average, 21 homers and 70 RBI. Pearce also will fill a big hole in a team nearly picked bare by the pros. Catcher Landon Powell and lefty Matt Campbell were first-round choices this past June. Pitchers Billy Buckner and Chad Blackwell, and infielders Kevin Melillo and Bryan Triplett were also selected in the draft's first 12 rounds. All went pro.
