COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

A businessman and former analyst for the FBI announced his candidacy for Columbia mayor on Tuesday afternoon.

Larry Sypolt declared his candidacy in front of the Five Points Fountain just after 2 p.m.

The Columbia native is calling upon his experience as a business owner and former Richland County Sheriff's deputy.

In a news release, Sypolt says his platform will focus on restructuring the Columbia Police Department, business development, and city-wide beautification projects.

The police department has been the subject of numerous controversies and turnover in the past several years.

Most recently, Police Chief Randy Scott announced he was going on an indefinite leave of absence for personal reasons.

With Sypolt's candidacy, there are now three men vying to lead the Capital City. Current Mayor Steve Benjamin is running for re-election and city Councilman Moe Baddourah has also declared his intentions to seek the job.
