Five hospitalized after Lake Murray boat crash

Posted: Updated:

LAKE MURRAY (WIS) - Two adults and five young children were sent to the hospital Saturday night after a boat collision on Lake Murray.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources says the collision happened near Spence Island around 9:00 p.m. when a 24-foot cuddy-cabin boat hit a pontoon boat.

After spending the day fishing on the lake, a grandfather and his three grandchildren had planned to spend the night on the pontoon boat, according to DNR.

Investigators say they were anchored near Spence Island when the cuddy-cabin boat hit them. The ages of the kids on the boat ranged from 3 to 8 years old. One of the children suffered a broken arm. The other two children and the grandfather were treated and released.

The driver of the 24-foot boat was also hospitalized. His condition is not known.

DNR says charges have not been filed, but investigators have not ruled them out.

Agents are trying to determine if proper lighting was used by both of the boats and if alcohol was involved.
