PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Three Arizona Department of Corrections workers who were injured when the DOC van they were in crashed have filed a lawsuit against the tire manufacturer.

Jeff Darden, Melissa Fowler and Ritchie Chin suffered injuries in the rollover that occurred about 7 a.m. April 5 on Interstate 10 five miles south of Riggs Road on the Gila River Indian reservation.

An Arizona Department of Corrections van carrying nine employees rolled Friday morning, injuring all nine aboard and blocking both eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 between Phoenix and Casa Grande for a short period of time.

The suit against Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, filed by John Osborne of Goldberg & Osborne, alleges that the left rear tire on the van lost its tread because of defects in the tire, causing the van's driver to lose control.

Chin was able to lift the van sufficiently to enable witnesses to pull Fowler from her position partially trapped beneath the van.

The nine correctional officers were returning from the Eyman Prison Complex near Florence to Phoenix when the crash occurred, according to Bart Graves of the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

No other vehicle was involved.

"This case demonstrates again that tire tread losses continue to plague our citizens more than 10 years after the Firestone cases," Osborne said.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages for the injured workers.
