Department of Revenue adds security measure to protect identities

Posted: Updated:

The South Carolina Department of Revenue says it has a new program to protect your identity while filing state income tax returns.

The department said Thursday it implemented a new security program that will spot potential fraudulent activity on tax filings in 2013.  Officials say the new plan should help prevent someone from filing a fraudulent state tax return in someone else's name.
For tax returns that are questionable, the DOR will mail the taxpayer a letter requesting additional information.  The letter will detail instructions for the taxpayer to either go online, or answer specific questions.

Once the process has been completed, the refund will be issued.

If you receive a letter from the Department of Revenue, it is legitimate. Department officials say some letters have been mailed to taxpayers already.

If you have questions, you can call the DOR at 898-5000 or click here.
