SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Thieves stole 500 Hot Wheels miniature cars during a break-in at a home in Spartanburg earlier this week.
The victim, who did not want to be identified, told FOX Carolina's Derek Dellinger that she was in the process of moving from her home when her sister called and asked why the back door was open. She said that when she arrived, she noticed that the home was ransacked.
"Someone had broken into the building [and] left the door open," the woman said. "Things had been knocked over and dumped out."
She said that despite the mess, the only thing that seemed to be missing was the hundreds of toy cars that were kept there. She said all the cars were still in their packaging - some of them 15 years old - all collectors items.
"We collect Hot Wheels and people knew that we did," the woman said.
Lt. Tony Ivey, spokesman for the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office, said the crime was likely committed by someone the woman knows.
"Most of the time, it's going to be for money," said Ivey. "That's the motivating factor probably in an overwhelming majority of burglaries - items of value to sell or trade."
The theft has left the victim rattled.
"Right now, we don't know who to trust or if there is anybody to trust anymore," the woman said.
Ivey said investigators are keeping an eye on pawn shops and the popular classifieds website Craigslist to see if the toys turn up.
