BISHOPVILLE, SC (WIS) - Bishopville town council voted unanimously Tuesday night against a proposed highway bypass around the town.
The $20 million highway project would divert traffic from downtown Bishopville. It's a project that has received strong opposition from taxpayers in the small town.
An economic impact study showed diverting traffic away from downtown poses a "great threat" to Bishopville.
However, Lee County Council has thrown its support behind the project because of a fear they'll lose millions in grant money.
So far, the project has cost taxpayers $775,000 and every penny may be headed down the drain. The feds told the county the project is off if the city isn't on board.
With Tuesday night's vote, it appears the project may be dead.
