The Calhoun County Coroner said a man wanted by Columbia Police in connection with a kidnapping Tuesday afternoon has been found dead.

Columbia Police issued warrants for the arrest of 40-year-old James Murphy Brigman, Jr Wednesday.

Brigman's body was found in a wooded area of Calhoun County, about 10 miles west of St. Matthews. County Coroner Donnie Porth said Brigman's body was found in his vehicle at about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Porth said he died of a gunshot wound some time Tuesday evening.

Police say Brigman kidnapped a female acquaintance from the 200 block of Greystone Boulevard around 5:00 p.m.

Preliminary information suggests that the victim was leaving a meeting and heading to her vehicle when she was taken against her will, police said.

Co-workers found some of her belongings scattered in the parking lot and called police.

The female was located that same evening in Calhoun County. She was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Investigators believe this was an isolated incident, not a random act.

Police say Brigman has a history of criminal domestic violence and harassment.
