Sumter County Sheriff's deputies have arrested a man accused of beating an elderly man and resisting attempts to arrest him.

Deputies say the victim and his wife were leaving their home on Blossom View Rd. Saturday afternoon when 23-year-old Akeem Desmond Logan of Sumter approached their vehicle and asked for directions.  When the couple told him they did not understand him, deputies say he punched the 83-year-old man who was sitting in the passenger seat.

After punching the man in the face, his wife told deputies Logan ran north on Blossom View Rd. A witness called 9-1-1 and reported seeing Logan on Brewington Road after getting into an argument with him.

Another witness told deputies Logan said "Yes, I hit that old man and I will hit you next."

As a deputy tried to stop Logan, investigators say he became uncooperative and ran away.  The deputy shot Logan with his Taser, but it didn't work.

Other deputies were called to help and they say as Logan ran away, he was taunting passing traffic.  A second deputy deployed a Taser and they say he remained uncooperative and threw punches at another officer.

Deputies say they tried to send a K-9 officer after Logan, but they had to call him off because there were too many bystanders in the area.

Deputies say after three shots from a non-lethal beanbag gun, another Taser was fired at Logan and they were able to subdue him and take him into custody.

Logan is charged with aggravated assault and resisting arrest.
