Darius Rucker, Robert Gates to address South Carolina graduates

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

It's no surprise to his fans that former Hootie and the Blowfish front man-turned-country music star Darius Rucker loves the University of South Carolina Gamecocks. He was one. And somehow a South Carolina logo always ends up in his music videos.

Rucker will be on the stage at the University of South Carolina's spring commencement ceremony in May. The University announced Rucker is giving the commencement address to the College of Arts and Sciences and South Carolina Honors College Saturday, May 11th. He will be presented with an honorary doctor of music degree.

Rucker and three fellow USC students formed Hootie and the Blowfish in 1986 and before they became national recording artists, the group was popular at many student venues throughout South Carolina.

The University also announced Friday former CIA Director and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates will address students from the Darla Moore School of Business, College of Mass Communications and Information Studies, College of Nursing, South Carolina College of Pharmacy and the Arnold School of Public Health.  Gates will also receive an honorary degree of doctor of public service at the ceremony Friday.

Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom Phillip Lader will deliver the commencement speech to graduates at a ceremony at 3 p.m. Saturday.  Graduates of the College of Education, the College of Engineering and Computing, the College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management, the Fort Jackson Military Base Program, Interdisciplinary Programs, Palmetto Programs, the School of Music and the College of Social Work will receive their degrees at the ceremony.
