Cynthia Warrick not on final list of S.C State presidential candidates

Posted: Updated:

South Carolina State University has released a list of the final three candidates they are interviewing to become the historically black college's new president.

In a news release sent to members of the media Friday afternoon, the university identified the three finalists as Thomas Elzey, E. Newton Jackson, and Leonard Anthony McIntyre.

Sources close to the situation say Elzey is heavily favored to become the next president. Elzey is currently the executive vice president of finance, administration, and operations at The Citadel.

While who is on the list is news, it's who is absent from that list that makes bigger news: current interim president Dr. Cynthia Warrick.

Warrick had been the favorite of the student body and university alumni to become the full-time president. S.C. State student government president Nathaniel Shaizer compiled a 1,500-signature petition asking the board to quit their search and make Warrick the permanent president.

Warrick was hired as the interim president late last Summer. She was previously a Howard University senior fellow at the School of Pharmacy.

Sources close to the situation say Warrick's chances of making the final list of presidential candidates "wouldn't happen in this lifetime" because she'd bring back the "old ways of handling money."

S.C. State has been without a full-time president since George Cooper resigned following a state and federal investigation into possible misconduct involving university officials.

Officials later indicted former board chairman Jonathan Pinson on federal kickback charges.

As for when they'll pick between the three finalists, S.C. State officials say they plan on interviewing the candidates during the week of April 8.
