Richland elections board asks legislators to address problems

The board that oversees elections in Richland County is asking the county's legislative delegation  to create additional voting precincts in the county.

The board met Thursday afternoon.

County election officials want to change the number of voters allowed in a precinct and they want to create additional precincts.

You'll remember high turnout at precincts was part of the problem at Richland County polling places during the November election. Too many voters in precincts contributed to a major backlog and wait time.  Some voters waited for as long as five hours to cast their ballots.

Two bills that have been filed in the State House that would take care of precinct issues. County election officials want the legislative delegation to help get those bills through.

The board also discussed hiring a successor to replace former Executive Director Lillian McBride, who resigned, but was rehired to the commission in a different job.  15 people have submitted applications for the job so far.
