Cottageville lottery winner bought ticket after stopping for cola

COTTAGEVILLE, SC (WCSC) -

A Cottageville man is $1 million richer after a gas station stop for soda turned out to be the perfect time to buy a winning Powerball ticket.

The lottery winner says he swung by a Cottageville BP gas station after running out of cola, and decided to drop $20 on lottery tickets for a shot at Saturday's $320 million Powerball jackpot.

One of his drawings matched the winning numbers of 17, 29, 31, 52 and 52, but missed the Powerball number 31.

After matching the five white balls, the winner says he was a "nervous wreck" and kept the winning ticket in a plastic sandwich bag.

He said he will be buying himself a new truck and wants his girlfriend to have a new car too.

"That much money will change our lives," he said.

The Cottageville BP located at 11020 Cottageville Highway received a commissions of $10,000 for selling the ticket. Lottery officials say this is the second time a $1 million winning ticket was sold at this location.

The odds of winning $1 million are 1 in 5,153,633.
