Over 500 Older Adults Welcome Company and Kosher for Passover Foods
New York, NY (PRWEB) March 21, 2013
Several hundred DOROT volunteers visited over 500 frail and homebound seniors who reside in Manhattan and Westchester County, alleviating their social isolation by participating in DOROT’s Passover Package Delivery on Sunday, March 17. DOROT welcomed volunteers of all ages, including community groups comprising up to 30 individuals. New York City Councilmember Gale Brewer addressed the volunteers, thanking them for their work on behalf of DOROT and the senior residents who benefit from their generosity.
The volunteers spent an hour with each senior, engaging them in conversation to keep them mentally and socially active, and delivered kosher for Passover foods to help them celebrate the holiday.
“Passover is a time of rejoicing, but that can be incredibly difficult for older adults on fixed incomes who also suffer from increased frailty and other effects of advanced age,” said Mark Meridy, Executive Director of DOROT. “At DOROT, our mission is to alleviate the social isolation of the elderly through the assistance of volunteers. The Passover Package Delivery is one of our hallmark programs that truly showcases our work keeping seniors connected to a caring community. We are grateful to our volunteers who help us carry out this annual program and to Councilmember Gale Brewer for acknowledging our work in the community.”
DOROT’s Holiday Package Deliveries program, now in its 37th year, brings hundreds of volunteers to the homes of frail older adults to help dispel their loneliness at times when they are acutely feeling the absence of friends and family. DOROT alleviates social isolation among the elderly and provides services to help them live independently as valued members of the community. We serve the Jewish and wider community, bringing the generations together in a mutually beneficial partnership of elders, volunteers and professionals.
