SLED investigating after Orangeburg deputy kills man during confrontation

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating after a deputy shot and killed a suspect Tuesday afternoon in Orangeburg.

Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said one of his deputies responded to a harassment call on Chitwood Street when the shooting occurred.

According to the Orangeburg County Coroner's Office, 42-year-old Berry Caldwell was shot and killed shortly before 1 p.m.

Residents in the neighborhood say Caldwell had a shovel during the confrontation with the deputy.

The deputy was not injured.

District 5 school spokesman Greg Carson says Whittaker Elementary School students were held inside when the shooting occurred. Carson says students were released after officers told them the situation was under control.
