COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Police are searching for a suspected jewelry store thief near Interstate 77 and Garners Ferry Road after a witness to the robbery chased his getaway car.

A spokesperson for the Columbia Police Department said the search stems from a robbery that took place at Mim's Jewelry, which located in the Landmark Square Shopping Center at 6780 Garners Ferry Road.

Jennifer Timmons says two armed men robbed the store late Tuesday morning. During the robbery, one of the suspects smashed a glass countertop jewelry case and stole some unidentified items, she said.

At least three other people were inside the store at the time of the heist.

The two men fled in a getaway car.

A witness then jumped in a car and chased the suspected robbers on Garners Ferry Road and eventually into the Pennington Way subdivision. The chase ended with the suspected getaway car crashing into a fence near Gavinshire Road and Pennington Road.

One person is in custody after an officer saw him running near the interstate. Police are still actively looking for a second man who got away on foot.

Authorities have not released a description of the wanted man.

Police say nobody was injured in the store.
