Rescued dogs in better health and good spirits

MONCKS CORNER, SC (WCSC) -

The Doc Williams SPCA is more than a second home for these dogs, it's a second chance.

"We're feeding them and everything, which probably is the best thing that has ever been done for them," says James Craig, a kennel technician.

The dogs were rescued from their home in Goose Creek on February 11th. Animal rescue says they were found in crates on property that had become a burial ground for 200 other dogs. Their owner, Loney Garrett, was charged with 43 counts of animal cruelty.

The shelter's executive director says this was an unusual case. She says they knew this would take a little more patience and support.

"We see animals like this, in this physical condition almost daily," explains Marcia Atkinson. "We don't know their story. We don't know what they've gone through. It's unusual that we would have this additional information, so, in a way it helps us know a little more what we're up against and what we can do to help them."

At the moment they have 225 animals. Their maximum is usually 200. She says community support has been overwhelming.

"We have foster families who have stepped up and taken some of our other animals here from the shelter so that we could continue to have room," says Atkinson.

The dogs are not ready for adoption. They will continue to rehabilitate and they are still part of an open investigation.  Donations can be made at http://www.docwilliamsspca.org/.
