COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

In the interest of keeping the roads safe this weekend, law enforcement agencies are teaming up to conduct a public safety checkpoint just down the road from Five Points' annual St. Patrick's Day celebration.

According to a Columbia Police Department spokesperson, the checkpoint will be in the area of Harden and Gervais Streets, less than a half mile from the St. Pat's in Five Points north entrance.

At various times throughout the weekend, officers will check to make sure drivers are not intoxicated and have a proper driver's license. They say they'll be looking for various other violations as well.

Police say every vehicle that enters the checkpoint will be stopped.

According to police, the areas for the checkpoints were selected based on traffic collisions and DUI violations that have occurred. They're hoping to reduce those violations.

St. Pat's in Five Points officials expect more than 40,000 people to attend the annual street festival on Saturday.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol and other law enforcement agencies will assist Columbia Police in the effort.
