LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC (WIS) -
Investigators with the Lexington County Sheriff's Department have determined the motive in a fatal shooting that killed a 56-year-old man on Emma Drive Thursday morning.
Sheriff James R. Metts says William Rush Falls was killed as a result of a dispute involving the recent death of a dog owned by the suspect in this case, 19-year-old Jeffrey O'Neal Kight, Jr.
The sheriff said that dog died after it was hit by a car on Old Barnwell Road near Lexington. The dispute remains part of a larger investigation into what exactly happened Thursday morning when Falls was shot.
According to a sheriff's department incident report, a deputy was flagged down just after 7:00 Wednesday morning in reference to a possible disturbance at 115 Emma Drive.
"As I walked to the side door I noticed the window broken," wrote the deputy. "I looked through the front window and saw a possible deceased body on the ground."
Detectives later identified the man as William Rush Falls.
Investigators say Kight fired a single shot from his shotgun into one of the home's windows and struck Falls in his face and neck.
The Lexington County Coroner's Office says the shot lacerated several blood vessels in Falls' neck and resulted in his death.
Kight was charged with murder and possessing a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
