Lindsey Graham could see primary challenge from gay GOP activist

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

One of the founders of a Republican gay rights group says he is "studying the resources, time and effort" to possibly mount a primary campaign against South Carolina senior Sen. Lindsey Graham.

Bruce Carroll, who helped to found GOProud, announced the decision in a blog post on GayPatriot.net. Carroll, the vice chairman of GOProud says he has also resigned from his position to avoid being a distraction to the gay rights group.

"I felt it best to resign from GOProud in advance of the CPAC conference this week so that my position in GOProud would not be a distraction from my serious deliberations regarding my potential future plans in South Carolina public service," said Carroll in his post.

Carroll goes on to say he will take his time and consult with many people to aid in his decision.

The York resident moved to South Carolina from Pennsylvania, where he was active in politics as a member of the Pennsylvania State Republican Party. According to his website, Carroll was also once a borough councilman in the Keystone State.

Graham is up for re-election in 2014. Several rumored candidates such as state Sen. Tom Davis have surfaced, but no one has publicly declared to run against the two-term senator.
