RICHLAND COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

Richland County Sheriff's deputies seized 14 illegal machines and more than $1,400 in the department's most recent sweep of suspected gaming parlors this week.

Deputy Curtis Wilson said after receiving tips from the community, deputies with the Community Action Team raided four businesses Thursday. The locations include: 7Up Mini Mart, Citgo and Boss Hawg's Lounge, all on Leesburg Road and Stevo's Wing's on Garners Ferry Road.

Deputies confiscated one video poker machine from Boss Hawg's, two machines each from 7Up Mini Mart and Citgo, and nine machines from Stevo's Wings.

In his effort to clear Richland County of illegal video gambling, the sheriff's department has seized 55 machines from clubs, homes, and convenience stores and more than $10,000 from the machines.  Since January, the department has conducted compliance checks and Crimestoppers investigations at more than 100 locations countywide.

Sheriff Leon Lott says his department continues to receive tips and information about businesses who are operating illegal video gambling.

"Let me be clear, that as long as it is a crime to gamble or possess gaming machines, we will prosecute you," said Lott.

Lott says illegal video gambling includes Internet sweepstakes, Magic Minutes, video gaming machines or anything similar.

"The newest trend is that these machines are now being found in residential homes," said Lott. "With the community's assistance we will continue to locate and seize these gaming machines."

A deadly virus is threatening the crawfish industry in Southwest Louisiana. It's called white spot syndrome virus and it was first discovered in Thailand, but somehow it made its way to ponds in South Louisiana and specialists are struggling to find the funds to research a solution.  “The catch was increasing and increasing and then it dropped 70% and that's when you saw the dead crawfish floating in the water,” said a crawfish farmer of 34 years, Ian Garbarino.
