Obesity is a major problem in South Carolina and DHEC Director Catherine Templeton is making it one of her top priorities. While that's laudable, seeking a waiver to limit food stamps to the purchase of healthy food items may not be the best tactic.
Obesity is a lifestyle issue, it's a dietary issue, it's an exercise issue. Awareness is our first defense, and that starts at home. Eating right, getting plenty of exercise, and living a healthy lifestyle will go further towards tackling obesity than telling folks what they can or can't spend their food stamps on. DHEC and DSS should focus their collective attention on creating awareness, developing get up and move programs, and providing healthy food options for our children at school where many get their only meal of the day.
That's my perspective.
