2 searches planned for missing West Ashley woman

WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) -

The CUE Center for Missing Persons says two more searches have been planned in the case of Gayle McCaffrey, a West Ashley woman who was reported missing by her husband last March.

Her disappearance from the Limestone Boulevard home still haunts her neighbors.

"We had helicopters," said McCaffrey's neighbor, Russ Rutan, describing the search for the mother of two in the days immediately  following her disappearance." We had everything. It's hard to believe something like that  would happen in your neighborhood, or happen to somebody close to you."

McCaffrey's husband told  authorities he saw his wife one day before she disappeared. According to him, they had a fight and he  left to drive to the Upstate. McCaffrey said when he returned to their West Ashley home his wife was gone, leaving behind her two children and  a typed letter.

Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon later called the note "bogus."

Although he has not been charged, the sheriff's office has since named Robert McCaffrey the prime suspect in his wife's disappearance.

"She'd always come in with her kids, and the kids were always running all over the place," said Phillip Hawkins, a worker at Ladles, as he recalled McCaffrey's frequent visits to the restaurant."Just a very nice woman."

Hawkins said McCaffrey was the kind of customer you got to know by name,  but now everyone knows her name for a different reason.

"I feel horrible for the family just wondering,  there's no answers," said Hawkins."There's no answer as to what happened, and that's the worst thing about it I think."

It is unclear when and where the new searches will be held, according to the CUE Center.

The Charleston County Sheriff's Office released a statement Thursday indicated no searches had been planned by them or McCaffrey's family.  Sheriff's office spokesman Jim Brady added that they are not always aware of searches conducted outside their jurisdiction.
