MONROE, NC (WBTV) -

The Monroe City Council unanimously approved funding for drone aircraft.

Officials told WBTV Friday funds from asset forfeiture will be used to purchase the drones.

Tuesday night, Monroe City Council approved a presentation by the Monroe Police Department for the purchase of an unmanned aircraft for help in critical police situations.

Lt. David Morton with the Monroe Police Department says the drone would be used in critical situations such as bank robberies or other crimes where a suspect might escape on foot. Lt. Morton said the department responded to a bank robbery just two weeks ago where an aerial view would have helped.

"The individual ran behind the building and to be able to have an aerial view would have been able to help us out tremendously," said Lt. Morton.

The drone is capable of flying at just over 60 mph and has a camera that can remotely feed live video.

The Monroe Police Department will be the first law enforcement agency in North Carolina to implement such technology.
