Cause revealed in massive apartment fire on Greystone

Posted: Updated:

The massive apartment that sent two people to the hospital and displaced at least 20 people has been ruled an accident, according to Columbia fire investigators.

Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins says the "accidental discarding of smoking materials" lead to the fire that started at Stone Ridge Apartments just before 4:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The apartment complex is located at 1000 Watermark Place near Greystone Boulevard.

First responders were dispatched for a smoke in building call. Upon arrival, additional 911 calls came in advising heavy fire and smoke. Crews from Irmo were called to the scene to assist.

Neighbors who were in other buildings saw the smoke and ran over and started knocking on doors to get people out.

A total of 12 apartments are damaged. Richland County EMS transported 2 people to the hospital for smoke related issues.

The fire was under control at 7:30 a.m.

The Red Cross is helping 20 residents who have been displaced.

Jenkins estimates the damage to be worth $272,000.
