COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Richland One School Board member Barbara Scott passed away Tuesday, according to a release from the school district.

According to the district, Scott was first elected to the Board of School Commissioners in 1974 and served in that capacity for eight years.

Scott eventually left the school board and was elected to serve as the Richland County Clerk of Court in 1984.

However, Scott would re-emerge as a school board member in 2008 when she won a four-year term to one of the at-large seats. She was re-elected to the seat in November 2012.

"Mrs. Scott's presence on the Board and her commitment to ensuring that all Richland One students receive a high-quality education will be greatly missed," said a statement from the district. "The entire Richland One family extends its heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Scott's family, friends and other loved ones."

A memorial service for Scott will be held March 11 at 4 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home. A visitation will be later that day at 5:30 p.m. at The Big Apple on Hampton Street.
