PROSPERITY, SC (WIS) -

Authorities have determined that a man reported missing and later found dead in a wooded area near Prosperity was beaten to death.

Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton says 56-year-old Walter Hawkins, Jr. died due to a laceration of the brain as a result of being excessively beaten.

Newberry County Sheriff's deputies on Sunday charged Hawkins' brother Daryl Richburg with his murder. A judge denied Richburg's bond Monday.

Sheriff Lee Foster says Hawkins' body was located off Maple Knoll Court, near SC 391. It is the same area Foster said deputies were searching for Hawkins, who was reported missing Saturday.

Foster said once investigators began piecing together evidence, they suspected foul play led to Hawkins' disappearance. Foster said they found blood evidence near the home Hawkins shared with his brother.

The 49-year-old Richburg was arrested and charged Sunday afternoon. Foster said family members saw him in a wooded area near their home and detained him until deputies arrived.

"The family members were able to hold him until we got there," said Foster. "This kind of gave us the idea to continue on with the search and with the help of family members we were able to find the body in this creek bed here."

Foster says the motive appears to have been an argument between the two and that alcohol was a factor. He said the body showed visible signs of trauma, but investigators couldn't determine what caused Hawkins' death.
