ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

Orangeburg Consolidated School District 5 administrators have suspended an Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School baseball coach after allegations surfaced that he assaulted a player.

Authorities identified the coach as Herm Winningham.

The investigation was prompted by a complaint filed by the mother of the team's catcher who says her son told her the former pro player became angry and attacked the 14-year-old Thursday during a game at Midland Valley High School in Aiken County.

Cindy James says Winningham kicked her son off the team and forced him to turn in his jersey after the game. But she says the school's athletics director reinstated the boy.

"My son was laughing at the coach because he was kicking things around in the dugout," said James. "He was kicking buckets around and he threw a chair, so my son was laughing and the coach came up to my son and grabbed him by his neck and told him I will fight you and I will bite you."

Winningham, 51, is a former Wilkinson High School centerfielder and was drafted by the New York Mets in the first round of the MLB Draft in 1981.

Winningham's MLB career began in 1984 and ended in 1992 with the Boston Red Sox.

District officials say the district and law enforcement officials are investigating the allegations.
