RICHLAND COUNTY, SC (WIS) - A man shot and killed in a gun battle with Richland County Sheriff's deputies this week had a prior arrest for criminal domestic violence.

According to the Lexington County Sheriff's Department's incident report in the case,  Adam Jurgen and his then girlfriend, were living together in Lexington.  The report details a text message argument that turned violent between the couple in September 2012.

The woman told deputies Jurgen accused her of cheating. She told him not to come home.  Hours later, the victim said Jurgen entered the home and started beating her.  She was able to escape and call police.

Deputies took out a warrant for Jurgen's arrest.

According to the same report, the victim also told deputies that Jurgen's behavior was "not like him" and that he needed help. Deputies say the victim requested he receive counseling.

On Tuesday, Jurgen was involved in a fight with a woman at a drug store on St. Andrews Road that led to gunfire. A worker at the store saw Jurgen and the woman in the store.  Moments later, the woman returned with a bloody face. Store employees called police.

Deputy Sheila Aull was the first officer to approach Jurgen.  The police report states when she chased him, Jurgen turned and fired, hitting her in her bulletproof vest.

When other officers arrived a gun battle began.  Deputies say Jurgen was shot dead after firing at officers.

Deputy Aull is recovering with the help of her family. Sheriff Leon Lott said he expects her to return to work "soon."
