Memorial honors cab driver slain in Strip wreck

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

The first memorial to honor one of the victims in the Las Vegas Strip shooting and resulting wreck took place on Wednesday.

Family, friends and colleagues of Michael Boldon turned out for the service honoring the taxi driver at Holy Trinity Church in North Las Vegas.

Boldon was behind the wheel of his cab that was struck by a Maserati and burst into flames just before 4:30 a.m. on Feb. 21. A passenger in the vehicle, Sandi Sutton-Wasmond, of Washington state, also perished in the fiery wreck.

"I wish everyone could have experienced the wonderful person that he was. My brother was a very special human being," said Michael Boldon's sister, Gigi Boldon.

According to Las Vegas Metro police, the Maserati's driver, Ken Cherry, Jr., had been targeted by a gunman in a Range Rover. Cherry's vehicle accelerated during the assault into the intersection at Flamingo Road and Las Vegas Boulevard, resulting in the crash.

Cherry died as a result of the shooting, authorities said.

Boldon's death has drawn the support of fellow cab drivers in the city, significantly through a $35,000 reward offered from the city's taxi industry. The reward, police said, is for information leading to suspected gunman Ammar Harris' arrest.

"Even though Boldon didn't work for my company, we don't look at this as a Desert Cab problem," Brent Bell, president of Whittlesea Blue Cab company, said. "We look at this as an industry problem. It's a city problem, and we're desperate to get this crime solved."

Meanwhile, Boldon's relatives say grieving has become tough for the entire family.

"I don't know how anyone can prepare for such an event [the memorial]," said Tehran Boldon, Michael Boldon's brother. "There's no way I could see how to prepare for this unforeseen tragedy."

Boldon's family also expressed the need for those responsible to be brought to justice.

"He's truly an angel. God really took one of his best. He took the best right there," Tehran Boldon said.

A memorial fund was set up in Boldon's name at area Wells Fargo bank branch. A donation can be made at any bank location in the Las Vegas area.

Boldon's family also plan on burying him in Detroit next to his father, who died of cancer.
