SC State trustees meet, vote to continue search for president

ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

SC State University's Board of Trustees voted Thursday to continue the search for a new president despite calls from the school's alumni association and the student government to suspend the search and hire interim president Cynthia Warrick outright.

Student government president Nathaniel Shaizer came armed with a 1,500-signature petition and told the board they'd be wasting time and money by not making Warrick the permanent replacement.

"We just had an interim search 8 months ago," said Shaizer. "Find someone else who we don't really know about."

Last year, the board gave Warrick the interim title, picking her from a list of temporary replacements until they could vet a more qualified, permanent candidate. The board voted to continue searching for their permanent president despite the Warrick pep rally outside the board room.

"This university and our students deserve the best possible president that we as a search committee can identify," said trustee Dr. Jackie Epps. "We deserve the best of the best. If she is the best, she will be the best...if she is the best candidate--she will be the president, simple as that."

The application period closes Saturday and Cynthia Warrick filed her application this week for consideration. The search committee will form a short list over the next several weeks before the board chooses the university's next permanent president.
