COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

The Kershaw County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a man who may be posing as an officer.

Sheriff Jim Matthews says he first learned of an incident a few days ago. Matthews says a man called 911 concerned that a man posing as a deputy stopped his wife in the county.

Matthews says the suspect made inappropriate comments to the woman during the stop. She was not hurt.

Deputies say she was very observant, giving them a good description of the suspect.

"He knows who he is, and we know who he is," said Matthews. "He needs to know we are going to take action if we get enough information to get an arrest warrant."

Matthews says he's investigating if this fake deputy has stopped anyone else.

The woman says the suspect was driving a silver SUV and he was not wearing a uniform or a badge.

"There are people who want to be police officers," said Matthews.  "Maybe they like the thrill of making a stop and exerting some authority over other people.  As I've come up over the years I've met a lot of people who are police 'wannabes".

If you believe you've been stopped by this impersonator, call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
