ORANGEBURG, SC (WIS) -
The excitement on the campus of South Carolina State University Tuesday
afternoon can be attributed to a student who parked off campus and was
seen running onto school grounds.
A staff member saw the person and alerted police. Once police tracked the man down it was determined that he was a
student and he was not armed, according to a university spokesperson.
The student was simply late for class and
took an unconventional route to class that raised concern, officials said.
A statement from SC State says: "The SC State University Police Department was recently notified of a
potential trespasser entering the campus on foot. The matter was
immediately placed under investigation and it was validated by the
Police Department that there was no threat to the safety of faculty,
staff, students and visitors on campus."
"Due to the use of social
media, the matter escalated to an unofficial announcement that was not
validated by University officials."
"All offices are currently open
and operable at this time. South Carolina State University remains
committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its faculty, staff
and most importantly students."
WIS received several calls into the newsroom about an armed man on campus. Authorities say that was never the case.
