Driver dies in head-on collision with garbage truck

One person is dead after colliding head-on with a garbage truck in Northeast Richland County late Monday morning.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash happened at 11:10 a.m. on Screaming Eagle Road near Highway Church Road.

Troopers say the driver of a Dodge Caravan, 59-year-old Paul M. York of Fort Motte, crossed the roadway for unknown reasons, clipped an eastbound tractor-trailer, and hit a Mack garbage truck head on.

York died on the scene. The Richland County Coroner's Office says he died from trauma associated with the crash.

The drivers of the tractor-trailer and garbage truck were not hurt.

The Highway Patrol is investigating.
