Fast Dreams: 15-year old gets a shot in NASCAR event

FLORENCE - If you blink, you might miss Tyler Howell drive past you. Racing has been part of his life, and he's been driving against others on the track for three years.  However, he's not even allowed to drive on highways yet.

"The first time I started driving is when I was 12 years old," he said. "It just sort of came natural. When I got in the car it just came to me."

Now 15 years old, Tyler Howell has a wealth of experience at high speeds on the track thanks to a NASCAR permit, yet he just got his South Carolina learner's permit a month ago. Though racing is something that is in his blood, and has had no problem seeing success.

"His second race, he won," Tyler's dad Roger explains. "I didn't want winning to come that easy for him, I wanted him to work for it, but his first year he won 12 races and is 12 years old."

Roger Howell builds racecars in Florence, and used to be a competitive driver as well. Even he admits to being a little weary in seeing his then pre-teen son take the wheel.

"You can hardly hold your knees up when you see him out there, but you want him to win."

Tyler still continues to find success. Later this month, he'll compete in the Battle at the Beach in Daytona – 150 lap race part of the Whelen All-American series, in a car his dad built.

With high expectations for both Daytona and the future, Tyler is confident he's on the right path of chasing his calling.

"This has been my dream since I was 12, and even younger, so I'm just out here hoping to do well, and chasing my dream," Tyler said.

You can see Tyler compete in the Battle at the Beach on February 18th on SPEED TV.
