NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -
The North Charleston Police Department has arrested two people accused of stealing $8,000 worth of construction equipment.
Investigators charged 37-year-old Trae Marie Crawford and 27-year-old Mickey Gerald Blackwell with grand larceny.
On Sunday morning, officers responded to the intersection of Dorchester Road and Purcell Drive for a theft of construction materials and received a description of the suspects' vehicle. Officers then spotted the vehicle at a gas station on Ashley Phosphate Road.
When officers told Blackwell why they stopped him, Blackwell said he had seen the metal on the ground at the entrance of Fireside Lakes on Dorchester Road Saturday night.
Blackwell said he told Crawford that if the metal was there in the morning, he was going to take it after hauling a broken stove and refrigerator away for her.
Blackwell told police he eventually loaded I-beams into his truck. According to investigators, Blackwell said that he knew that the metal came from a construction site at Dorchester Road and Purcell Drive.
