It's not TV, it's reality: Sumter County Sheriff's Office forms it's own SVU

SUMTER COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

Sgt. Melissa Addison leads the Sumter County Sheriff's Office's new special victims unit. It formed last fall in a effort to zero in on sex crimes against children and adults.

Addison says the office receives about 10 cases a month on the issue, which is an increase over the past few years. She says it's due to increased awareness of such crimes in the media.

The four person team also focus on criminal domestic violence and physical abuse cases.

Before SVU was formed, Addison says these types of cases would be spread out to investigators in several departments and offices. She's glad one office can focus specifically on these cases.

"We are able to come together, and build upon our training and our experience and insights," said Addison.

The SVU team consists of three veteran investigators and a victim's advocate. Their goal this year  is to get out in the community and educate the public about their office to encourage victims of abuse to come forward.
