MIDLAND CITY, AL (WSFA) -

One day after authorities successfully rescued a child hostage from an underground bunker in Midland City, Alabama, authorities say bomb technicians have found and "disrupted" two explosive devices.

One of the devices was located inside the bunker where Jimmy Lee Dykes held the child, known as "Ethan", over a seven day period. The other device was located inside the PVC ventilation pipe Dykes and authorities used to communicate.

Bomb techs with the FBI, ABI and Dothan Police Department continue to search the area around the crime scene for explosive devices. They say the search is expect to continue through Wednesday.

After the search is completed and the area is deemed safe, Evidence Response Teams will begin to process the scene. That phase of the investigation is also expected to last several days.

Authorities are also starting to reveal some of the details around the FBI's decision to breach the bunker. A preliminary investigation indicated that Dykes engaged in a firefight with the SWAT agents who moved into the bunker to rescue the child. Dykes was killed in the siege, though it's not known at this point if his death was self-inflicted or at the hands of law enforcement.

NBC News is reporting that sources have confirmed to them that Dykes was on the ladder leading out of the bunker was preparing to emerge when FBI agents threw two devices at him. The source says Dykes attempted to fire at the agents, who then fired back, killing him.

Jason Pack, a Special Agent with the FBI and Alabama Joint Information Center, said it also appears that Dykes reinforced the bunker against any attempted entry by law enforcement, though no details on the exact nature of the reinforcements was given.

The Dale County Sheriff's Department and the Alabama Department of Public Safety are working with residents who have been displaced due to the standoff. They say they're taking each request on a case by case basis so they can take care of animals and other needs.

"Ethan" who celebrates his sixth birthday Wednesday, was not physically injured in the siege, according to authorities, and appears to be doing the normal things children his age do. He's back in the care of his family.

His mother released a statement through the FBI Tuesday afternoon. ""For the first time in almost a week, I woke up this morning to the most beautiful sight ... my sweet boy," she wrote. "I can't describe how incredible it is to hold him again."

Birthday cards can be mailed to Ethan at this address:

NFPD c/o Lt. McDaniel
400 Headquarters Street
Napier Field, AL. 36303
