NEWBERRY, SC (WIS) -

Rae Knobloch is a freshman at Newberry College. She loves it.

But the 18-year-old said she and her parents were worried if tuition went up next year, she would have to transfer.

But a decision from school administrators to freeze tuition rates will allow Knobloch to stay.

"I was excited knowing that I don't have to leave Newberry because of the price going up," she said.

Last month, Newberry College's Board of Trustees voted to freeze tuition for the next three years.  $22,050 is the rate that's now locked in for current and future students.

"I know what I'm going to pay now and I know what I'm going to pay in three years," said Knobloch. "So it helps me prepare more for that."

It's called Tuition Promise.

"Were trying to do some innovative things here," said Newberry College Vice President of Institutional Advancement Scott Joyner.

He said Tuition Promise is an effort to recruit and retain students like Knobloch.

"Once we get you here, it's our job to keep you here and keep you happy and matriculating through your program and it hasn't always been a focus here," said Joyner.

Joyner said the new focus should not affect the school's budget as long as they attract more students.  Since 2007, enrollment has hovered around 1100 students.

They hope Tuition Promise and new majors like social media and accounting will increase that number to 1500 students in a few years.

Junior history major Heather O'Brien said the tuition freeze will save students a lot of money.

"We will have less loans and that will be delightful," she said. "Because more loans, more debt, which is not good especially right now because the economy has gone down so much."

A debt that won't get any higher for Knobloch, right now and all the way up to graduation.

"I can stay at the school I love," she said.  "And they are going to help me stay."

Tuition Promise does not include room and board. Administrators say 96% of students receive some sort of scholarship.
