6-year-old expelled for bringing plastic gun to school will be allowed back

A Sumter County kindergartner expelled from school for bringing a broken plastic gun to show and tell will be allowed to return to class.

District Superintendent Randolph Bynum says he will allow 6-year-old Naomi McKinney to return to school at Alice Drive Elementary School.

"After careful thought and consideration for the safety of the school community, I have decided to vacate the ruling of the hearing panel," said Bynum in a statement. "The student will be allowed to return to school. The suspension time has been served."

McKinney has already missed 30 days of school after being suspended for bringing her brother's Airsoft BB Gun to Show-and-Tell back on Jan. 4.

Bynum added that administrators and teachers have received threats as a result of McKinney's expulsion.

"Threats made to staff members are not tolerated, and we intend to involve law enforcement," said Bynum.
