VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -
The Valdosta State softball team will look start their defense of their national championship this weekend.
The Lady Blazer softball team will open the season ranked number one in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II preseason poll.
Head coach Thomas Macera's team got all the first place votes even though the Lady Blazers lost eight seniors from last year's national championship team.
Despite those losses, Gulf South coaches have also picked the Lady Blazers to win the conference title with a lineup that returns Morgan Johnson, Ashley Steinhilber and Courtney Albritton who moves to shortstop this season.
The VSU softball team opens the season in Pensacola for games against Southern Arkansas on Saturday and Young Harris on Sunday.
