SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) -
Residents living along Hwy. 61 in Summerville may have been shaken out of their sleep early Tuesday morning due to an earthquake.
United State Geological Survey (USGS) is reporting there was an earthquake Tuesday at 4:17 a.m. originating in the area of Dogwood Ridge and Ashley River Road near Mateeba Estates. The earthquake registered at 1.4-magnitude.
It has been more than 100-years since Charleston suffered one of the most devastating earthquakes in U.S. history, but smaller earthquakes are not uncommon. Officials say South Carolina has about a dozen small earthquakes a year.
A 2.8-magnitude earthquake was recorded in Summerville on July 31, 2012. The earthquake, which occurred in an area about four miles from Lincolnville and Summerville and five miles from Ladson, was felt by a number of residents.
Charleston was hit by one of the most devastating earthquakes in U.S. history back in 1886. The 7.3-magnitude earthquake crumbled much of downtown Charleston.
